Pakistan Warns UN of Dangerous Mideast Escalation

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 16 — Pakistan has warned that escalating Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and renewed fighting in Yemen have brought the Middle East conflict to an extremely dangerous juncture.
Speaking at an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad condemned the attacks and reaffirmed Islamabad’s support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
Ahmad said the expansion of attacks around the Bab al-Mandab Strait represented a serious escalation and warned that threats to commercial shipping could affect international trade, global supply chains and energy security.
He said Pakistan supports Saudi Arabia’s right, under the UN Charter and international law, to take necessary measures to defend its territory and citizens.
Pakistan also called for urgent de-escalation, dialogue and an inclusive Yemeni-led political process under UN auspices.
The United States and China similarly called for restraint and a return to negotiations during the Security Council meeting.
The developments follow renewed fighting along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and growing concerns over the security of the Bab al-Mandab maritime corridor.
