Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that the US-Israeli war against Iran is damaging ecosystems and biodiversity, calling for international action to address the environmental consequences of war.
Addressing the COP17 Leaders’ Summit in Yerevan, Armenia, on Friday, Pezeshkian said military operations threaten forests, fertile land, wetlands and water supplies. He added that weapons can release hazardous chemicals and heavy metals, putting future generations at risk.
He urged the international community to take urgent measures against the environmental impact of military aggression.
Meanwhile, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called for environmental commitments to produce practical results. He warned that desertification, water shortages and land degradation threaten sustainable development and global stability.
Tokayev stressed that environmental challenges should be addressed beyond political differences, highlighting their impact on millions of people.
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov also emphasized international cooperation in tackling global environmental challenges. He reaffirmed Kyrgyzstan’s support for Armenia’s initiative to establish the Yerevan Platform on Mountain and Freshwater Ecosystems and expressed readiness to participate actively.
Armenia is hosting the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) in Yerevan from October 19 to 30. The summit brings together government delegations, international organizations and civil society representatives to review biodiversity conservation progress and discuss further action.
