BERLIN, Nov. 4 (AA) – German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Wednesday congratulated US Democrats on their midterm election victory while stressing that European countries must take greater responsibility within NATO to maintain strong transatlantic ties.
Speaking at the Berlin Security Conference, Pistorius said credible deterrence against an increasingly aggressive Russia requires both a strong Europe and a strong partnership with the United States.
He said Washington has increasingly focused on the Indo-Pacific and other regions, making it important for European allies to strengthen their own military capabilities and share a greater burden within NATO.
Pistorius stressed that Europe must become more capable of defending its own continent while maintaining close cooperation with the United States.
He said Germany and its European partners aim to improve their military readiness as quickly and comprehensively as possible by 2029.
By 2035, the goal is for Europe to become a key pillar of conventional defense, supported by new military capabilities in space, cyberspace, artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.
