PM Directs Winter Gas Plan To Limit Power Loadshedding

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed authorities to ensure electricity load shedding does not exceed two hours in any area and ordered immediate measures to address disruptions in RLNG supplies.
Chairing a meeting on electricity load management, the prime minister expressed concern over increasing load shedding nationwide and directed authorities to utilise available resources to maintain electricity supplies.
The meeting was informed that regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) supplies had been affected by the situation in the Middle East and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. The disruption reduced electricity generation and resulted in load management to balance demand and supply.
Prime Minister Shehbaz ordered steps to ensure uninterrupted RLNG imports, keeping regional developments and future requirements in view.
He also directed formation of Consumer Grievance Redressal Committees at distribution companies within one week to address public complaints concerning electricity transmission and supply. Public representatives will also be included.
The meeting was attended by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Climate Change Minister Mushtaq Malik, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Power Minister Sardar Awais Leghari, Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah and senior officials.
RLNG disruption has affected cargoes from Qatar through the Strait of Hormuz, while higher spot-market purchases increased costs. RLNG-based power generation costs rose 242 percent to Rs47.4 per unit in July from below Rs14 in April.
