Poland Faces Political Crisis Over Constitutional Court Leadership

rki.news | Source: Xinhua
WARSAW, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) – A leadership dispute at Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal has triggered tensions between President Karol Nawrocki and Prime Minister Donald Tusk over judicial independence and constitutional authority.
The dispute began Friday when an announcement suspended the tribunal’s president and vice-president for one month and named Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska to temporarily oversee the court. The tribunal later claimed its website had been illegally taken over.
Opposition supporters protested outside the court, with clashes involving police and several people reportedly injured.
Nawrocki, an ally of the opposition Law and Justice party, accused those involved of violating the constitutional order and called for urgent political talks.
Tusk rejected the accusations, pledging to protect the tribunal’s independence.
The dispute stems from Nawrocki’s refusal to recognize five judges elected by parliament, reflecting wider disagreements over judicial reforms.
The European Commission said it was monitoring developments and stressed that the tribunal must comply with Poland’s constitution and EU rulings.
Analysts warn the confrontation could deepen political divisions and complicate judicial reforms and relations with the EU.
