NEW YORK – Princess Diana’s iconic black “revenge dress” is returning to auction for the first time since 1997, with Sotheby’s estimating it could sell for between $150,000 and $300,000.
Designed by Christina Stambolian, the dress was worn by Diana at a Vanity Fair fundraising dinner on June 29, 1994.
Her appearance came on the same evening that a documentary aired in which her estranged husband, then-Prince Charles, now King Charles III, admitted he had been unfaithful during their marriage. The couple had been separated for nearly two years.
Diana’s arrival in the fitted black dress became one of the recognized images of her and a defining moment in modern fashion history. The media soon dubbed it the “revenge dress,” viewing her choice as a confident response while her marriage faced intense scrutiny.
The off-the-shoulder dress features a pleated bodice, asymmetric hemline and dramatic chiffon train. Diana wore it with black heels, a clutch and a pearl choker featuring an antique sapphire-and-diamond brooch.
The dress was among 79 outfits Diana offered at a charity auction in June 1997. The sale raised funds for cancer and AIDS charities, and owners purchased the dress.
A signed copy of the original auction catalogue will accompany the dress. Part of the auction proceeds will benefit NHS Lothian Charity on behalf of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
Before the New York auction on Dec. 9, the dress will be exhibited in London, Hong Kong and Geneva.
