LOS ANGELES: Record rainfall flooded roads and stranded motorists in Nebraska overnight, while flash and river flooding continued in parts of Kansas and Missouri, the US National Weather Service (NWS) reported.
Lincoln, Nebraska’s capital, received 156.2 millimeters of rain Wednesday, breaking its previous single-day record of 138.4 millimeters set in 1910. Omaha recorded 120.4 millimeters, also breaking its previous daily record of 50.3 millimeters set in 1911.
The Nebraska State Climate Office said Lincoln experienced its wettest September on record, with 291.8 millimeters, while Omaha recorded its second-wettest September.
Lancaster County, which includes Lincoln, declared a local state of emergency Thursday.
The NWS said Gulf moisture and remnants of former Hurricane Polo contributed to heavy rainfall and flooding in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Flooding covered roads, submerged vehicles and triggered a mudslide near Crescent, Iowa.
Flash and river flooding continued Thursday in northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri, with widespread rainfall of about 51 to 102 millimeters since Tuesday.
The NWS had issued a flash-flood emergency after officials warned of the imminent failure of McLeod Dam.
