Russia on Wednesday described Japan’s alleged intelligence activities under the guise of journalism as “unacceptable,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
“This is not an isolated incident,” Zakharova said, adding that similar cases had occurred recently.
Russia earlier arrested Imai Yuki, a Japanese correspondent for the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper’s bureau in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and accused him of spying.
Zakharova said Tokyo’s alleged use of correspondents stationed in Russia to collect intelligence was regrettable and further damaged relations between the two countries.
Her remarks highlight continuing tensions between Moscow and Tokyo over alleged espionage activities. The Russian Foreign Ministry maintained that such actions by journalists undermine trust and complicate bilateral relations, which have faced repeated diplomatic challenges.
