MOSCOW, Sept. 22: Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on Tuesday highlighted the importance of the space industry to Russia’s economy and its role in developing other key sectors.
Speaking with Roscosmos chief Dmitry Bakanov, Mishustin said crewed space programs are being updated, including plans for a new transport spacecraft and the Russian Orbital Station, which is expected to eventually replace the International Space Station.
He said satellites monitoring weather and ice conditions along the Northern Sea Route are already operating and helping support year-round navigation.
Mishustin also said Russia prioritizes cooperation with private companies in space exploration and emphasized the continuing development of the country’s space capabilities.
Bakanov said Russia has launched nearly 60 spacecraft into orbit this year, including telecommunications, navigation and Earth remote-sensing satellites.
He said the country’s combined space constellation has reached nearly 400 spacecraft and satellites, covering communications, navigation, Earth observation and other important functions.
