NEW YORK, Sept. 13 — Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina defeated two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to win her first US Open women’s singles title on Saturday.
The victory gave Rybakina her third Grand Slam crown and confirmed her rise to the world No. 1 ranking in women’s tennis. She had already won the Australian Open earlier this year, also defeating Sabalenka in the final.
Rybakina recovered strongly after losing the second set and controlled the deciding set with powerful groundstrokes and consistent serving. She also ended Sabalenka’s bid for a third consecutive US Open title.
The Kazakh player entered the tournament after overcoming an ankle injury but produced a series of impressive performances in New York.
The final marked another major chapter in the growing rivalry between Rybakina and Sabalenka, who have now met in several Grand Slam finals.
Rybakina’s victory makes her one of the leading figures in women’s tennis this season and strengthens her position at the top of the global rankings.
