ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday condemned recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the kingdom’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security under the Makkah Defence Alliance.
In a post on X, the prime minister condemned attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha International Airport, which reportedly caused civilian casualties.
He praised the vigilance and professionalism of Saudi armed forces and the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen for intercepting ballistic missiles.
Shehbaz expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the kingdom’s right to self-defence under the joint defence agreement.
He called on the Houthis to immediately stop their attacks, assuring Riyadh that Pakistan would continue standing alongside Saudi Arabia against security threats.
The Makkah Defence Alliance, signed on August 7, includes Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. It aims to strengthen collective deterrence and provide a framework for members to respond to attacks against any signatory.
On Wednesday, Saudi authorities reported three deaths and 36 injuries following attacks on two international airports. The Houthis subsequently claimed responsibility for targeting the Saudi capital’s main airport.
Pakistan has repeatedly expressed support for Saudi security. On October 5, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye agreed to facilitate the rapid deployment of military forces and capabilities in the kingdom during an emergency alliance meeting in Riyadh.
Islamabad has maintained that the alliance is defensive in nature and intended to strengthen collective deterrence.
