Strategic Stability Offers New Framework for China-US Relations

rki.news | Sources Xinhua
China-U.S. relations are entering a new phase as Chinese President Xi Jinping makes his second state visit to the United States, 11 years after his first. The concept of “strategic stability” has emerged as a possible framework for managing differences between the world’s two major countries.
According to the column, this approach does not seek to eliminate competition but prevent it from becoming uncontrollable. China and the United States have different economic, technological and strategic interests, and some differences may take time to resolve.
The column argues that maintaining communication channels, including during periods of tension, is essential for managing disagreements and preventing crises. Dialogue does not necessarily mean positions converge, but can help both sides address sensitive issues directly.
“Strategic stability” is presented as an approach that adds crisis management to the traditional focus on the balance of power. It emphasizes predictability, consultation and mechanisms to prevent misunderstandings from escalating.
The column says stability requires reciprocity, with both sides considering each other’s interests and concerns. It also notes that the relationship has wider implications for the global economy and international security.
The article concludes that strategic stability would not end China-U.S. competition, but could provide a framework for coexistence while reducing risks of confrontation.
