BANGKOK, October 8: Thailand’s opposition parties have submitted a formal no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and 17 cabinet ministers, accusing the government of concentrating state power and weakening democratic institutions.
The seven-page motion was submitted to House Speaker Sophon Zaram on Thursday and carries the signatures of 145 opposition lawmakers. It was led by People’s Party leader and opposition leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut.
Speaking at parliament, Natthaphong said the censure debate would seek to examine what he described as the “Blue Regime,” referring to the political network linked to Anutin’s ruling faction.
The motion lists several allegations against the prime minister and ministers, including claims of political interference and collusion during recent Senate elections, corruption in local administrative examinations and inadequate handling of the country’s ongoing flood crisis.
Opposition representatives said they had requested five days for the parliamentary debate because of the large number of ministers facing the motion.
The no-confidence debate is tentatively expected to take place in late October.
The government has yet to respond to all the allegations contained in the opposition motion, which will now proceed through parliamentary procedures.
