NEW YORK, September 09: American Frances Tiafoe produced a remarkable comeback at the US Open on Tuesday, defeating fellow American Alex Michelsen in a five-set thriller to reach the tournament’s semifinals for the third time.
The 11th-seeded Tiafoe recovered from two sets down to win 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(6) after a dramatic contest lasting more than four hours at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Michelsen, playing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final, had controlled much of the opening stages and came close to securing a major upset. Tiafoe, however, fought back strongly and eventually prevailed in the deciding match tiebreak.
The victory marked Tiafoe’s third US Open semifinal appearance. He will face fellow American Ben Shelton in the last four after Shelton defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in another five-set quarter-final.
The match also featured a notable moment of sportsmanship as Tiafoe consoled an emotional Michelsen at the net following the contest.
Tiafoe’s comeback adds another memorable chapter to his US Open career as he continues his pursuit of a first Grand Slam final.
