US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could be arranged “very soon,” while leaving open further US strikes on Iran after next week’s midterm elections.
Speaking aboard Air Force One after campaign rallies in Texas, Trump said discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff covered both conflicts.
He said progress was being made on the Russia-Ukraine conflict but gave no details about the proposed meeting’s timing, location or format.
Moscow and Kyiv last held US-mediated peace negotiations in January and February, with three rounds of talks in Abu Dhabi and Geneva. A meeting between the presidents would be unprecedented since the war began in 2022.
On Iran, Trump said Tehran wanted an agreement with Washington but might delay negotiations until after the November 3 midterm elections.
Asked about further US strikes on Iran after the elections, Trump declined to give a definite answer, saying “anything’s possible.”
The conflict began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, triggering a wider regional crisis. Despite a ceasefire and efforts to finalise a peace agreement, the conflict remains unresolved.
