US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Washington was not negotiating with Iran, adding that developments in the conflict would occur “fairly soon.”
“We are going to have something one way or the other that’ll happen fairly soon,” Trump told reporters after returning from a rally in South Carolina.
Speaking at the rally, Trump said the United States could end its war with Iran immediately but wanted to ensure that the outcome would last. He claimed Washington had defeated Iran militarily and financially and insisted that Tehran would never obtain a nuclear weapon.
His remarks came after The New York Times reported that US and Israeli militaries had developed plans for possible renewed strikes on Iran following the US midterm elections. However, the report noted that Trump had not necessarily approved such action and had previously rejected plans for a return to major combat.
A White House official declined to comment on military plans that might or might not exist.
The United States and Israel launched their war against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.
A memorandum of understanding signed in June following Pakistani and Qatari mediation has since stalled amid disagreements, including over navigation through the strait.
