British Prime Minister Andy Burnham reaffirmed UK support for Ukraine during a call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday, while Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband reiterated London’s backing in talks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
According to 10 Downing Street, Burnham expressed solidarity with Ukraine following recent Russian attacks. The leaders also discussed sanctions and maintaining pressure on Moscow.
The UK pledged to strengthen sanctions and take further measures to restrict Russia’s ability to wage war.
London urged Moscow to agree to an energy ceasefire covering attacks on energy facilities. It stressed that Ukrainian infrastructure and Black Sea maritime trade should not be targeted, adding that an energy truce could benefit global markets.
“The UK stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and will continue to stand with them until they prevail,” Miliband wrote on X after meeting Sybiha in northern Ukraine.
The statements followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement that Russia would supply diesel fuel to the United States and global markets after his call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelenskyy criticized the proposed deal, warning that easing sanctions without an agreement to de-escalate the conflict would demonstrate “obvious weakness.”
