UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday strongly condemned a Houthi attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which reportedly killed 12 people and injured hundreds.
“I am deeply shocked by and strongly condemn Saturday’s lethal attack,” Guterres wrote on X, stressing that attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international law. He called for an immediate halt to such attacks.
According to Saudi civil aviation authorities, those killed included four Saudis, two Bangladeshi nationals and citizens of the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.
The injured were taken to hospitals for treatment, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Airport operations were temporarily suspended following the attack as officials assessed the damage and checked the safety of facilities. The disruption affected flights, and passengers were advised to check with their airlines before travelling to the airport.
Kuwait Airways also cancelled its Saturday flights to Riyadh and return services, citing the airport’s closure.
The attack came amid heightened regional tensions following Houthi missile and drone strikes targeting Saudi airports and facilities in recent days.
