UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) — The United Nations on Tuesday condemned repeated drone strikes on civilians and critical infrastructure across Sudan, warning of their devastating impact on communities affected by more than three years of conflict.
UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric condemned the reported killing of dozens of civilians in a drone strike on a market in Al Dibab, West Kordofan State, on Sunday.
He said four family members, including three children aged between two and six, were reportedly killed when a drone struck a residential area in Khartoum on Monday. Another strike in Nyala, South Darfur State, reportedly caused civilian casualties and damaged nearby homes.
In White Nile State, drones reportedly damaged the main power station in Tendalti on Tuesday.
Dujarric stressed that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected under international humanitarian law and urged all parties to take precautions to prevent harm during military operations.
He also condemned drone strikes in the Abyei region along the Sudan-South Sudan border that reportedly killed at least 28 civilians at Amiet Market and Todach on Monday.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy Pekka Haavisto is in Geneva for a meeting aimed at coordinating peace initiatives and supporting efforts to end Sudan’s prolonged civil war.
