UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly opened Tuesday, with new President Khalilur Rahman calling for renewed trust in multilateralism and stronger international cooperation.
Addressing delegates at UN headquarters in New York, Rahman said the United Nations faces challenges as it enters its ninth decade, including conflicts, fragile development gains and worsening climate impacts.
He said the session will focus on six priorities: strengthening peace and security, accelerating sustainable development, advancing climate action, promoting human rights, ensuring technology benefits people and restoring confidence in multilateral cooperation.
The session theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All,” reflects the need to rebuild confidence through dialogue, cooperation and effective action.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that conflicts, inequality, climate change, nuclear risks and rapid technological advances are placing unprecedented pressure on global institutions.
He also highlighted record displacement, growing humanitarian needs, reduced aid funding and continued violations of international law and human rights.
Guterres expressed hope that the General Assembly, through diplomacy and collaboration, can rebuild trust and deliver solutions for a safer, healthier and more peaceful future.
