GENEVA, October 9: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk welcomed the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to former UN rights chief Navi Pillay, calling it recognition of the global struggle for human rights and justice.
Speaking in Geneva on Friday, Turk congratulated Pillay and praised the award as a proud moment for the human rights movement.
He said human rights face growing challenges, including attacks by powerful individuals and groups.
Turk said the prize honours defenders who continue working despite threats to their safety.
He stressed that human rights, the rule of law, justice and accountability are essential for peace, security and prosperity.
Turk highlighted Pillay’s legal career, including her service as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice.
Pillay also served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and chaired the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. During her tenure, the commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
