WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 — A US ban on nearly $1 billion worth of imports from Canada, including selected alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motor vehicles, took effect Tuesday.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning the sale of certain Canadian goods in the United States, marking another development in ongoing trade tensions between the two countries.
The restrictions cover a relatively small portion of bilateral trade, which totals about $880 billion annually, and are not expected to have a major overall economic impact.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the measures were introduced in response to what he described as Canada’s discriminatory treatment of critical American exports.
In July, the US administration announced a 50% tariff on certain Canadian goods, alleging discriminatory practices by Ottawa. Those tariffs took effect Aug. 22.
Canada responded by announcing tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on selected US products. The Canadian measures came into force Sept. 8.
The latest actions add to continuing trade tensions between the two longstanding economic partners.
