The United States, Japan and South Korea have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security and economic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, signing a new agreement to explore maritime and economic partnerships in the Pacific Arctic.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun on Friday on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta.
According to the US State Department, the three officials signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) establishing a Trilateral Arctic Pacific Partnership (TAPP).
The agreement aims to explore opportunities for maritime cooperation and economic partnerships in the Pacific Arctic region.
The foreign ministers also reiterated their commitment to North Korea’s denuclearization and called for full implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
They stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Rubio also raised concerns over China’s efforts to assert control in the South China Sea.
On economic security, the three countries opposed economic coercion and the use of supply chains as instruments of pressure.
They also reviewed progress under a trilateral Memorandum of Cooperation on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) deployments, signed in Ankara in July on the sidelines of a NATO summit.
