US Weighs Military Options as Houthi Attacks Raise Regional Tensions

WASHINGTON, October 16: US President Donald Trump has warned Yemen’s Houthi group over alleged attacks on Saudi Arabia, raising speculation about possible US military involvement amid regional tensions and rising oil prices.
Trump accused the Houthis of seeking to drive up oil prices ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. However, Washington has avoided joining Saudi Arabia’s direct military campaign.
Reports indicate that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged Trump to authorize US strikes, but Washington opted for intelligence sharing and targeting assistance.
Analysts say intervention would depend on the severity of Houthi attacks, Riyadh’s requests and the risks of prolonged conflict.
US military options may also be constrained by depleted missile and interceptor stockpiles following operations against Iran. A Congressional Research Service report highlighted concerns over ammunition availability and replenishment timelines.
The Houthis’ growing drone and missile capabilities pose further challenges for regional air defences.
The dispute also carries political implications for Trump as Americans face rising energy costs. US inflation reached 3.7 percent year-on-year in September, while gasoline prices rose 9.1 percent from the previous month, according to official data.
With energy prices a major voter concern, further escalation could increase pressure on the administration ahead of the midterm elections.
