SEPANG: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen secured his first Formula One victory of the 2026 season by winning a rain-delayed Bahrain Grand Prix at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit on Sunday.
The four-time world champion held off Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli to claim his 72nd career victory in a race affected by heavy rain and technical problems.
The start was delayed for more than 90 minutes because of difficult weather conditions. Several drivers also experienced software-related problems during the formation lap, creating an unusual start to the race.
Antonelli finished second while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton completed the podium in third after recovering from 18th place following an early tyre strategy gamble.
Verstappen had started from pole position but briefly lost the lead before Turn One. He later regained control and maintained his advantage as conditions improved.
The result gave Red Bull its first victory with its own power unit and ended Verstappen’s wait for a win this season.
George Russell’s title hopes suffered another setback when the Mercedes driver retired with an engine problem five laps from the finish.
Formula One officials are expected to investigate the technical problems that affected several cars.
