Two deadly bus accidents occurred on Wednesday in Ghazni province, central Afghanistan, leaving 52 people dead and 65 others injured. The incidents, which involved a fuel tanker and a truck, occurred on the busy highway linking Kabul to Kandahar.
The first collision took place near Shahbaz village, where a bus crashed into a fuel tanker, while the second incident happened in Andar district, where another bus collided with a truck, said Hamidullah Nisar, the provincial head of information and culture.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban government spokesman, expressed sorrow over the accidents, confirming the number of casualties. Rescue teams quickly arrived on the scene, transferring the injured to nearby hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Traffic accidents in Afghanistan are common due to poorly maintained roads, reckless driving, and lack of regulation. Earlier this year, another collision involving a bus and a fuel tanker in Helmand province killed over 20 people. A similar incident in the Salang Pass in December 2022 claimed 31 lives and left many others severely burned.
The incidents have highlighted ongoing challenges related to road safety in Afghanistan, exacerbated by decades of conflict and a lack of infrastructure improvements
