The European Union has condemned the recent Israeli settler violence in Jit, located in the northern West Bank, calling for an immediate halt to these “unacceptable” actions. Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, issued a strong statement on Friday, denouncing the attacks aimed at terrorizing Palestinian civilians.
“We condemn the settlers’ actions in Jit, which are meant to instill fear among Palestinians,” Borrell stated on X (formerly Twitter). He further highlighted that “day after day, Israeli settlers, with near-total impunity, are fueling violence in the occupied West Bank, jeopardizing any prospects for peace.”
Borrell urged the Israeli government to take swift action to stop these violent acts. He also expressed his intent to propose EU sanctions against those enabling the violence, including members of the Israeli government.
The situation in the West Bank has become increasingly tense in recent years, exacerbated by regular Israeli military raids. Since the escalation of the Gaza conflict on October 7, 2023, at least 633 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 5,400 injured by Israeli forces, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
In a landmark decision on July 19, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land illegal, demanding the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem
