The UN Human Rights Office has strongly condemned a recent call by an Israeli minister to displace people from the West Bank, warning that such statements exacerbate an already critical situation.
During a UN briefing in Geneva, spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani expressed deep concern over comments made by Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, who suggested implementing Gaza-style measures in the northern West Bank. These include the temporary evacuation of Palestinians, in response to a major military operation in the region.
Shamdasani highlighted the ongoing violence and violations against Palestinians in the West Bank, including settler aggression, arbitrary detentions, and the lack of accountability. She emphasized that these actions contribute to a “climate of impunity,” further deepening the region’s volatility.
The spokesperson also criticized the use of airstrikes and other military tactics by Israeli security forces, urging Israel to uphold its international law obligations as an occupying power. Shamdasani called for independent investigations into any unlawful killings and for those responsible to be held accountable.
The UN continues to monitor the situation, urging de-escalation to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian crisis in the West Bank.
