Azerbaijan reported that its military positions near the Armenian border came under fire on Thursday, accusing Armenian forces of escalating tensions. According to the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, Armenian troops allegedly targeted positions near Zivel in the Kalbajar region at 9:55 a.m. local time. Azerbaijani forces responded with what they called “adequate retaliatory measures.”
Armenia’s Defense Ministry swiftly denied the accusations, calling them “misinformation” and stating that the claims did not reflect reality.
The two nations have experienced recurring tensions since the early 1990s over the disputed Karabakh region, which Armenia seized but was mostly reclaimed by Azerbaijan during the 2020 conflict. Despite a Russian-brokered peace deal, incidents like this continue to strain relations as both sides work toward border normalization and lasting peace.
