Ex-CJP Saqib Nisar returns to Pakistan, dismisses allegations as ‘baseless’

Former Chief Justice of Pakistan, Saqib Nisar, arrived in Lahore last night, dismissing recent allegations against him as “baseless”. Nisar landed at Lahore airport, where he briefly addressed the media. “I have returned to Pakistan. The allegations circulating on social media are false. I will not respond to them,” he said. Nisar’s return follows his earlier announcement in September that he would come back to Pakistan amid increasing scrutiny regarding his alleged links with former ISI chief, Lt-Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed, and his role in events on May 9. Last month, during a television programme, a journalist revealed details of a phone conversation with Nisar. According to the journalist, there are growing inquiries into Nisar’s actions, including his handling of the Top City housing case. The journalist reported that Nisar was asked about allegations suggesting he not only dismissed the Top City case but also destroyed related records. Nisar responded, stating, “I made decisions as a judge based on the records and what I deemed correct.” When pressed on his alleged connections with Faiz Hameed and his role in the May 9 incidents, Nisar became visibly agitated, saying, “I am not answerable for these matters.” The journalist also claimed that evidence against Nisar had been mounting, prompting his departure to London. Nisar, however, maintained that his trip was routine. This development comes amid the recent arrest of former ISI Director General Faiz Hameed, who is under military detention, along with three retired officers, as part of ongoing court-martial proceedings.
