India’s Supreme Court has mandated all protesting doctors to return to work by Tuesday, warning of possible “adverse action” if the directive is not followed. The protests began after the tragic rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, West Bengal, whose body was discovered on August 9.

The doctors, demanding justice and improved hospital conditions, have raised concerns about the lack of security and basic amenities, including resting spaces for staff in government-run hospitals. In response, the court has urged the West Bengal government to address these concerns by installing CCTV cameras and providing separate duty rooms and toilets for male and female staff.

Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud emphasized that doctors must prioritize their responsibility to serve the public. The court, which initiated the case following widespread outrage, had previously established a task force to enhance hospital safety.

The incident has sparked international demonstrations, with protests held in over 130 cities across 25 countries, drawing attention to ongoing issues of sexual violence against women in India.
