Sir Syed Day Event in Doha Celebrates Legacy of Education and Community Bonding

Doha, Qatar – November 1, 2024 – Under the dedicated leadership of Dr. Syed Jaffery, the Aligarh Muslim University Alumni in Qatar held a memorable Sir Syed Day celebration at the Radisson Blu, Doha. The event honored the educational vision of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, gathering alumni, dignitaries, and community members in an evening of reflection, learning, and unity.

The dynamic emcees for the evening were Mrs. Nazia and Mrs. Nuzhat welcomed Chief Guest, Professor Abbas Ali Mahdi, Vice-Chancellor of Era University, who delivered an inspiring address emphasizing the transformative power of education and how Sir Syed’s visionary legacy has become a cornerstone of his own academic journey. The special invitee, Mr. Atif Hanif, shared the evening’s keynote, “The Relevance of Sir Syed in the 21st Century,” which reminded attendees of Sir Syed’s enduring influence on contemporary society and education.

The program commenced with a beautiful recitation and translation of Quranic verses by Ms Halima, followed by the national anthems of Qatar and India. A solemn moment of silence honored the martyrs of Gaza and Palestine, after which floral bouquets were presented to distinguished guests, setting a respectful and reflective tone for the evening.

A special children’s skit titled “Beyond the Walls” captivated the audience, presenting an important message about the accessibility and significance of education. The program also celebrated several outstanding alumni. Dr. Aamir Ahmad was honored for his recent ranking among the top 0.4% of scientists worldwide—a point of pride for all in the Alig community. The event also witnessed the book launch first time in Qatar, of the hard work of Mr. Atif Hanif “Discovering AMU” among other notable moment. The President Dr. Syed Jaffery proudly announced two (2) scholarships by the AMU Alumni Qatar for Science and Technology – Prof Mahdi Hasan Memorial scholarship honoring our great Professor of Anatomy at the JN Medical College AMU. The second Scholarship announced was for the students of Business & Entrepreneurship in memory of our ardent supporter Mr. Sabih Bukhari. Mr. Sanaullah of Gulf Lights has kindly sponsored our education endeavors.

Mrs. Naheed presented on the integration of artificial intelligence in education, while Mr. Ali Imran and Mrs. Shadma shared poetry capturing the life and legacy of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Alumni were delighted by a lively children’s quiz and a cake-cutting ceremony, celebrating the birthdays of members in attendance—fostering a sense of community and joy.

A unique highlight was the presence of Dr. Shama Parveen, an alumnus from the 1966 batch, whose career in botany served as an inspiration to all generations of Aligs. Esteemed attendees included Mr. Saad Al Sulaiti, a prominent businessman in Doha, H.E. Nazrul Islam, Ambassador of Bangladesh, Prof. Syed Javaid Zaidi, UNESCO Chair for Water Desalination and professor at Qatar University, and Er. Asif Rahmany, President of Engineers Australia, Qatar Chapter, Mr. Subramanya Hebbagelu of Indian Cultural Center. Representative of Gulf Air officiating on behalf of Mr. Khalil Alnazar was our event collaborator.

In a special segment, video greetings were received from past members who had moved abroad, bridging connections across borders. The event concluded on a patriotic note with the AMU University Tarana (Anthem), followed by a community dinner and an informal musical gathering that extended the spirit of camaraderie.

With over 200 attendees, this Sir Syed Day was a resounding success, celebrating not only the legacy of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan but also the spirit and achievements of the AMU alumni in Qatar and beyond.
