New York, November 18 (QNA) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged G20 nations to harness their economic and diplomatic power to address global challenges, including peacebuilding, climate action, and financial equity.
Speaking ahead of the G20 summit, Guterres emphasized the urgency of tackling shared crises, highlighting ongoing wars’ devastating human toll. He called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and progress toward a two-state solution, as well as a ceasefire in Lebanon and adherence to Security Council resolutions. He also reaffirmed the importance of the UN Charter and international law in achieving peace in Ukraine.
Guterres criticized the outdated global financial system for failing vulnerable nations, urging reforms to make it more inclusive and supportive of developing economies. He highlighted the “Pact for the Future” as a framework for these reforms.
On climate, Guterres expressed alarm over slow progress at COP29 in Baku and warned that current policies could lead to a catastrophic 3.1°C temperature rise by 2100. He called on G20 members, responsible for 80% of global emissions, to lead with ambitious climate finance goals and actionable national policies.
“The world must step up together for peace, fairness, and climate solutions,” Guterres concluded.
