India delivered a dominant performance, defeating Australia by 295 runs in the first Test in Perth on Monday, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. The visitors, defending a massive 534-run target, bowled out Australia for 238 late on Day 4.
Jasprit Bumrah starred as captain and bowler, taking 3-42 in the second innings and a match haul of eight wickets. Mohammed Siraj provided crucial support with 3-51.
“Very happy with the team’s response after the first innings pressure,” Bumrah said, praising his team’s preparation and resilience.
Australia’s Travis Head fought valiantly with 89, and Mitchell Marsh contributed 47, but they couldn’t overcome the disciplined Indian bowling. Key breakthroughs included Siraj dismissing Usman Khawaja early and Bumrah removing Head, ending a promising 82-run partnership with Marsh.
Earlier in the match, India posted 150 in the first innings, only to bowl out the hosts for a paltry 104. In reply, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal impressed with 161, and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 100 piled pressure on Australia.
India’s first Test win in Perth since 2008 adds momentum ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, where regular skipper Rohit Sharma will return.
Australia, led by Pat Cummins, faces scrutiny for their batting and bowling woes. “We didn’t execute in key areas, and there’s much to improve,” Cummins admitted.
This emphatic victory silences critics who doubted India after their home defeat to New Zealand, while Australia must regroup quickly to stay competitive.
