Dr. Akmal Burkhanov, Director of Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan, emphasized the importance of international collaboration in combating corruption during the second Ministerial Meeting of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Doha, Qatar. Speaking with Rahbar Kisan International, Dr. Burkhanov highlighted the summit’s significance in fostering dialogue and sharing expertise among OIC member states.
Dr. Burkhanov noted that the inaugural meeting was held in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, and expressed his enthusiasm for the growing scope of the event. “I am very happy that this meeting is continuing and that the geography of our conference is expanding. It provides a valuable opportunity to exchange opinions and experiences,” he stated.
He underscored the evolving nature of corruption, citing new challenges posed by technological advancements such as cryptocurrency and IT-related fraud. “Corruption is increasingly global and transnational. It is crucial for us to exchange experiences and learn lessons from other countries,” Dr. Burkhanov explained. He expressed optimism that the summit would enhance Uzbekistan’s cooperation with other OIC member states in addressing these issues.
Addressing the financial impact of corruption, He highlighted its staggering cost, which now exceeds $3 trillion annually, with government corruption accounting for a significant portion. “This is a grave concern that demands urgent action. However, the political will demonstrated by countries gathering here to address these challenges is encouraging,” he remarked.
He stressed the importance of using platforms like the Doha summit to strengthen collective efforts against corruption, particularly within government institutions. Dr. Burkhanov concluded by emphasizing that such events play a critical role in reducing corruption globally and fostering accountability.
