New York, December 01 (QNA) – Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), has confirmed that the ongoing military operation in northern Gaza has displaced 130,000 people over the past seven weeks.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that the continued hostilities across Gaza are putting Palestinians, especially civilians in northern Gaza, at severe risk as they struggle to survive under the Israeli blockade.
According to OCHA, humanitarian partners report a critical shortage of adequate shelter for the hundreds of thousands displaced by the fighting.
Less than a quarter of shelter needs have been met, leaving nearly a million people vulnerable to harsh winter conditions.
Around 545,000 people are currently living in damaged buildings or temporary shelters, highlighting the urgent need to allow immediate delivery of blankets into the area.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has also raised alarms over the worsening hunger crisis in Gaza, with the cost of basic food items skyrocketing by more than 1,000 percent compared to pre- conflict levels.
Meanwhile, in the West Bank, OCHA reported a worsening situation for Palestinians, with Israeli forces using increasingly lethal, war-like tactics that appear to far exceed standard law enforcement measures.
