British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the need to strengthen Ukraine’s position as NATO allies prepare for potential negotiations to end the war with Russia. Speaking in Bergen, Norway, alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Starmer highlighted the importance of increased military capabilities, financial support, and sanctions.
“Russia could stop the war today,” Starmer stated, urging NATO to double down after nearly three years of conflict since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
Store echoed this stance, stressing that any negotiations must include Ukraine and be defined on its terms. “This war, with its devastating human cost, must end as soon as possible,” he said, reaffirming Norway’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.
The meeting comes amid concerns over the upcoming January 20 inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, who has criticized defense aid to Ukraine. European leaders are urging the continuation of support to counter these uncertainties.
Starmer also discussed a new Green Industrial Partnership with Norway during his visit and is scheduled to meet Estonia’s Prime Minister Kristen Michal later Monday. On Tuesday, he will attend the Joint Expeditionary Force Leaders’ Summit in Tallinn, Estonia.
