Multan – Pakistan’s spin duo of Sajid Khan and Abrar Ahmed dismantled the West Indies on the third day of the first Test in Multan, guiding the hosts to a dominant 127-run victory.
Sajid was the standout performer, taking 5-50, and finishing with impressive match figures of 9-115. Abrar supported brilliantly with 4-27 as the West Indies were bowled out for just 123, well short of the 251-run target. The two spinners accounted for all 10 wickets in West Indies’ second innings, with Noman Ali adding a key contribution of 1-42.
Alick Athanaze was the lone bright spot for the visitors, scoring 55, the only half-century of the match. He and Tevin Imlach had a 41-run partnership for the sixth wicket, but Sajid broke their resistance by removing Athanaze. Abrar took the final wicket, dismissing Jomel Warrican to seal the win for Pakistan.
Warrican, who had earlier produced a career-best 7-32 to help dismiss Pakistan for 157 in their second innings, was the standout bowler for West Indies. His match figures of 10-101 were the best ever by a West Indian bowler in Pakistan.
Pakistan’s captain, Shan Masood, was full of praise for his spinners but urged his team to improve their batting. He acknowledged the challenges of the pitch but emphasized that they needed to add more runs when batting in similar conditions.
West Indies’ captain Kraigg Brathwaite admitted his side’s batting had been below par and stressed the importance of belief for the upcoming second Test.
The match, which lasted fewer than eight sessions due to poor visibility on the first day, saw Pakistan take an early 1-0 lead in the two-Test series. The second Test will begin on January 25, also in Multan.
