President-elect Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he would sign an executive order to delay the federal ban on TikTok, hours after the app was removed from major app stores, rendering it inactive for U.S. users.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I’m asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark,” and promised to issue an executive order on Monday to extend the deadline for the ban. This move aims to buy time to negotiate a deal to address national security concerns.
The TikTok ban stems from a 2024 law mandating that app stores and cloud providers stop distributing the app unless it is sold by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. Lawmakers have raised concerns over the potential for the Chinese government to use TikTok for surveillance or spreading propaganda to its 170 million U.S. users.
Companies that do not comply with the law could face hefty financial penalties. Trump assured in his post that companies assisting in keeping TikTok operational would not face legal repercussions before his order is signed.
The outcome of Trump’s plan remains uncertain, as his order may face legal hurdles, and companies could still risk penalties for non-compliance with the law passed by Congress.
