Washington, January 24, 2025 – US President Donald Trump called on Russia to end the war in Ukraine, urging President Vladimir Putin to reach a resolution swiftly and warning of severe economic consequences if no deal is achieved.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the urgency of peace: “I’m going to do Russia and President Putin a big favor. Settle now and stop this ridiculous war! If no deal is reached, I will impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on Russian exports to the US and other nations.”
He noted Russia’s critical role in World War II while lamenting the ongoing conflict: “No more lives should be lost. Let’s make a deal!” Trump criticized the war as unnecessary and pledged to engage in talks with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin.
In a White House briefing, Trump hinted at additional sanctions on Russia, stating they are “likely” if Putin resists peace negotiations. He expressed skepticism about continued US military support to Ukraine, saying, “We’ll look into that,” while urging the European Union to shoulder greater financial responsibility.
Trump accused the Biden administration of incompetence, asserting the war “would never have started” under his leadership. He claimed underreported casualty figures, estimating Russian and Ukrainian losses to exceed one million combined.
While offering no timeline, Trump vowed to meet Putin and Zelenskyy to end the war, stressing: “President Zelenskyy wants peace, but it takes two to tango.”
Trump’s statements mark his administration’s intent to prioritize diplomacy while leveraging economic measures to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
