Cairo, January 28 (QNA) – The 61st meeting of Arab Senior Officials Committee on Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction kicked off today at Arab League headquarters in Cairo.
The meeting will run for three days.
In his opening remarks, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of International Political Affairs Sector at Arab League Ambassador Dr. Khalid bin Mohammad Al Manzalawi explained that the meeting would cover several key issues of importance to Arab countries in areas of arms control and disarmament.
These include preparations and coordination of Arab positions for the 69th General Conference of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the third preparatory meeting for Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and Conference on establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.
He emphasized the importance of Senior Officials Committee, which is the only technical body within Arab League that addresses weapons of mass destruction, particularly nuclear weapons.
Since its creation in mid-1990s, the committee has played a crucial role in monitoring Israel’s nuclear capabilities and in formulating unified Arab positions on disarmament and non-proliferation in international forums
