JERUSALEM – The cost of Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza has reached an estimated $42 billion, averaging around $83.8 million per day, according to a report by Yedioth Ahronoth on Friday.
Citing Gil Pinchas, Economic Advisor to the Israeli army’s Chief of Staff and head of the Budget Department at the Ministry of Defense, the newspaper revealed that as of mid-January, the war had cost 150 billion shekels ($42 billion). The single largest defense expenditure was the funding of reserve forces, amounting to 45 billion shekels ($12.5 billion).
Additionally, a single night of missile defense against Iran’s recent attack, in coordination with the international coalition, cost Israel approximately 1 billion shekels ($279 million). In early October, Iran launched around 180 ballistic missiles at Israel, claiming it was in retaliation for the assassinations of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders and a senior Revolutionary Guard commander.
A temporary ceasefire agreement, mediated by Egypt and Qatar with U.S. support, went into effect on Jan. 19. The deal, which includes a prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel, is set to last 42 days, with negotiations ongoing for subsequent phases.
The war has had devastating consequences, with over 47,400 Palestinians, mostly women and children, killed and more than 111,000 injured since October 7, 2023. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, with over 11,000 people missing and widespread destruction leaving thousands without shelter, food, or medical care.
International legal bodies have taken action, with the International Criminal Court (ICC) issuing arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
