US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order prohibiting transgender women from competing in female sports categories. The order, effective immediately, empowers the Department of Education to investigate high schools, universities, and grassroots sports programs suspected of non-compliance.
Trump argues the move ensures fairness in women’s sports, while LGBT advocacy groups condemn it as discriminatory. The order aligns with policies already implemented by governing bodies in athletics, swimming, and golf, which restrict transgender women from competing at elite levels if they underwent male puberty.
Under the new directive, schools that allow transgender women in female sports risk federal funding cuts. The administration also plans to engage organizations like the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) to address concerns of female athletes and their parents.
Furthermore, Trump has vowed to prevent transgender athletes from competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, stating that visa applications from transgender competitors will be denied. “The war on women’s sports is over,” he declared.
LGBTQ+ groups have strongly criticized the order, warning it could lead to increased harassment and discrimination. Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson stated, “Sports should be about inclusion, not policies that make life harder for young athletes.”
With less than 1% of the U.S. population identifying as transgender, according to UCLA’s Williams Institute, the impact of this ruling is expected to be significant but limited in scope.
