Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine, according to the New York Post.
During an interview aboard Air Force One, Trump declined to disclose how many times they had spoken but stated, “He wants to see people stop dying.” Neither the Kremlin nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment.
In January, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin was open to a phone call with Trump and was awaiting a response from Washington. Trump also revealed that he might meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week to discuss a possible resolution.
As the war approaches its third anniversary on February 24, the conflict has claimed thousands of lives, mostly Ukrainians. Trump reiterated his strong relationship with Putin and claimed to have a concrete plan to end the war but did not provide details.
“I hope it’s fast,” Trump said. “Every day people are dying. This war is so bad in Ukraine. I want to end this damn thing.”
Trump has previously stated he could resolve the war quickly if re-elected, though specifics of his approach remain unclear.
