China retaliates with new tariffs as US Trade war escalates

China has imposed new tariffs on American goods in response to fresh US import taxes, further intensifying trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Beijing’s new duties, effective Monday, include a 15% tax on US coal and liquefied natural gas, along with a 10% levy on American crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-engine vehicles. These measures were announced shortly after the US imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports on February 4.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump has signaled further trade restrictions. Speaking on Air Force One en route to the Super Bowl, he confirmed plans to impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports. Additionally, he announced “reciprocal tariffs” on unspecified nations, aiming to match duties levied on American exports.
Beyond tariffs, China has tightened its grip on critical exports, placing restrictions on 25 rare metals vital for electronics and defense industries. Beijing has also launched an anti-monopoly probe into Google and added PVH, the US-based owner of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, to its “unreliable entity” list.
Trump’s trade policy has sparked concerns worldwide. South Korea convened an emergency meeting to assess the potential impact, while the European Union awaits clarity on possible exemptions. Beijing has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization, calling US tariffs “discriminatory and protectionist.”
Despite ongoing disputes, Trump has indicated that tariff suspensions on small Chinese shipments will remain until systems are in place to collect duties efficiently. However, with tensions rising, both economies face continued uncertainty.
