Washington, February 12 – Following a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump announced that negotiations to end the ongoing Ukraine war would begin immediately. The conversation, which took place Wednesday morning, marked the first known exchange between the two leaders since Trump took office last month.
The call comes a day after Russia released American prisoner Marc Fogel, which Trump administration officials hope signals a fresh effort to resolve the nearly four-year conflict in Ukraine.
Trump shared details of the conversation on Truth Social, mentioning discussions on Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the U.S. dollar, and other matters. According to the Kremlin, the call lasted nearly 90 minutes.
Trump has previously expressed his intention to engage with Putin to help end the war. “We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s nations,” Trump stated. He added that both sides had agreed to start negotiations immediately, and he would personally inform Ukrainian President Zelenskyy about the discussions.
This call stands in contrast to President Joe Biden’s lack of communication with Putin in nearly three years. The last U.S. president to visit Russia was Barack Obama in 2013.
Steve Witkoff, one of Trump’s chief negotiators on the Ukraine conflict, suggested that the release of Fogel is a sign of positive potential for future cooperation between Trump and Putin. “I think it’s a sign of how their working relationship will shape up and the broader impact on global peace,” he said.
