Azerbaijan’s Cultural Alphabet Book presented at Qatar National Library

On February 19, NARGIS Magazine hosted the presentation of “Əlifba. A Cultural Alphabet” at the Qatar National Library in Doha. The event highlighted Azerbaijan’s rich cultural heritage through its alphabet, blending history, art, and tradition.

The event welcomed distinguished guests, including Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari, President of Qatar National Library; Adish Mammadov, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Qatar; Sheikha Wadha Al Thani; cultural figures; representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora; and guests from the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Qatar.

The book, created by Ulviyya Mahmud, Editor-in-Chief of NARGIS Magazine, serves as both an educational and artistic endeavor for readers of all ages. Each letter of the Azerbaijani alphabet is paired with vivid illustrations and information about significant architectural landmarks, artworks, folklore characters, and historical traditions. The book is available in four languages—English, Arabic, French, and Spanish—aiming to promote Azerbaijani history, culture, and language globally.

During the event, NARGIS Magazine Director Mujgan Gafarzadeh shared insights into the project’s origins and significance. Guests also enjoyed a screening of “History in Letters,” a documentary animated drama exploring Azerbaijani culture through the alphabet. Directed by Meran Ismailsoy and written by Agamehti Abidov, the film featured animation by Kenan Sheykhzamanli and Nargiz Heydar, with illustrations by Orkhan Huseynov.

A crystal book stand, crafted by sculptor Teymur Garibov, was presented by Mahmud to Sheikha Wadha Al Thani. Additionally, an art installation titled “Welcome to Baku” by Rashad Alakbarov was showcased, immersing attendees in Azerbaijani heritage. The event concluded with a sampling of Azerbaijani cuisine, enhancing the cultural experience.

As a special gesture, attendees received complimentary copies of the book, the February issue of NARGIS Magazine, and cultural souvenirs. Later in the evening, the Marina Twin Towers featured a light projection of illustrations from the book, offering residents and visitors a visual taste of Azerbaijani art.

Originally launched in 2019 in Istanbul, the project has since traveled to Berlin, with future presentations planned in Rabat, Madrid, London, and beyond. NARGIS Magazine expressed gratitude to PASHA Holding, the Azerbaijan Trading Corporation in Qatar, and the Azerbaijani Embassy in Qatar for their support.
