President Donald Trump held his first Cabinet meeting of his second term on Wednesday, with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in attendance. The meeting comes a day after the House narrowly passed a budget resolution, setting the stage for Trump’s policy agenda.
One of the key issues under discussion is the administration’s efforts to freeze foreign aid. The congressional Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) subcommittee is reviewing the impact of these cuts, though legal challenges have delayed Trump’s attempts to block global funding. On Tuesday, a federal judge ruled that billions in withheld aid must be released, citing non-compliance with a previous court order.
During the meeting, Trump’s Cabinet members showed strong support for Musk, applauding when a reporter asked if anyone opposed DOGE’s work. “If they are, I’ll throw them out,” Trump quipped. Musk praised Trump’s team, calling it “the best Cabinet ever” and emphasized the administration’s efforts to improve government efficiency.
Musk, wearing a MAGA hat, was the first to speak after Trump’s opening remarks. He described DOGE as “tech support for the government” and claimed his efforts could help the U.S. save $1 trillion. He also revealed receiving death threats but remained focused on his work.
Meanwhile, Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.), the top Democrat on the DOGE subcommittee, criticized Musk’s role, dubbing the situation the “Elon Musk chainsaw massacre.” She urged him to testify before Congress, highlighting concerns over the administration’s approach to budget cuts.
Trump is expected to sign more executive orders later in the day.
