Ankara, March 07 (QNA) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed Friday his country’s commitment to the goal of joining the European Union (EU), expressing his country’s aspiration for the European Union (EU) to adopt strategic positions with a vision and revive membership negotiations.
The Turkish president emphasized, in a speech during the meeting of leaders of like-minded countries organized by the European Union (EU) via the Internet, that planning with Turkiye on European security will serve the common interest of both sides.
Erdogan noted that the current challenges have revealed the importance of relations between Turkiye and the European Union (EU) for Europe’s economic and defense security.
Regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war, he underscored the need for a solid diplomatic foundation that includes both parties to the war for a just, lasting and honorable peace, stressing his country’s support for the idea of stopping air and sea attacks to build trust between Russia and Ukraine and achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible.
He added that it is important to be part of mechanisms such as the European Peace Mechanism aimed at rebuilding Ukraine and helping it rise, noting in this context that Turkiye has made intensive efforts to end the war through dialogue since day one, and had announced at every opportunity that there is no loser in a just peace.
Turkiye has been seeking to join the European Union (EU) for years without making much progress, as the Europeans argue that Ankara does not comply with the Copenhagen criteria, which require candidate countries to adopt an economic policy based on the open market and ensure the existence of strong institutions that promote democracy and the rule of law.
