JEDDAH – US and Ukrainian delegations convened in Jeddah on Tuesday to explore potential peace negotiations with Russia. The high-level talks, attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, aim to ease tensions between Washington and Kyiv.
According to Al Arabiya, Ukraine is set to propose a partial ceasefire plan, seeking to regain US support. The discussions follow last month’s White House confrontation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump. On Sunday, Trump emphasized the need for Ukraine to show a genuine commitment to peace, stating, “We’re going to make a lot of progress.”
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to ending the war, blaming Russia for prolonging the conflict. Since launching its military offensive on Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has demanded Kyiv renounce NATO aspirations—a condition Ukraine rejects as an infringement on its sovereignty.
The Jeddah talks mark a crucial effort in assessing diplomatic solutions to the ongoing war, with Saudi Arabia playing a mediating role.
